Since the advent of the World Wide Web, it is now possible to virtually never have to leave your home. You can apply online for credit cards, personal loans, consolidation loans, memberships, bank accounts, and mortgages. You can shop, pay your bills, reconcile your bank account, look for employment, apply online for jobs, read the newspaper, and buy groceries, as well as a multitude of other things. All this right at your fingertips! Just twenty years ago this type of thing would be unheard of by many. If you don’t have a computer or access to the internet, you are missing out on a whole new world. The internet has provided us with a way to communicate with people around the world in a manner of seconds via email. We can even run home businesses from our computer and sell products and services to people anywhere, right from our own personal computer. You can now even get a college degree online, you don’t have to leave your home, and most of the time it’s more affordable than traditional colleges and universities. You may miss out on the social aspect of doing things the traditional way, but that just may not be your cup of tea anyway! I can continue to give you even more examples of how the internet has allowed us to apply online: veterans can apply online for benefits and services, you can get life insurance, car insurance, and health insurance. Students can apply online to colleges and universities across the country, and for various types of financial aid, grants, scholarships, fellowships, internships, and other types of student assistance. Senior citizens can apply online for social security, secondary insurance plans, assisted living facilities, and help to pay for expensive medications. People can apply online for various types of public assistance too, such as help to pay high heating bills or the rent, as well as help with child care, unemployment benefits, welfare, and food stamps. The federal government even has sites available to people outside the United States in a variety of different languages, enabling them to apply online for work visas, entry visas, and to apply for citizenship. People can apply online for federal grant and loan programs for individuals and small businesses, and for other types of federal assistance. If I haven’t convinced you by now what you’re missing out on if you don’t have a computer, then I guess you just have no interest. That’s okay, it’s completely up to you. But I can assure you, that once you are bitten by the internet bug, there is no turning back. You’ll become addicted just like everyone else. How did we all go on so long without it? Hmmmm.
